Weight Loss Injections – NHS Eligibility Criteria

Non-urgent advice: Weight Loss Injections – NHS Eligibility Criteria

You may have heard in the news that GPs can now prescribe weight loss injections, such as Mounjaro, on the NHS. This information is about how the weight loss drug tirzepatide (Mounjaro) will be prescribed to patients.

The local NHS is aiming for this drug to be available to those eligible later in the year but is paused whilst we set up local clinics for Derby and Derbyshire.

We are working across the local NHS to put in place community-based clinics to meet areas of greatest need. This is being organised by the Integrated Care Board (ICB) which has the responsibility.

How can I access tirzepatide (Mounjaro)

Please do not contact your GP if you think you are eligible as it will not be available in Derby and Derbyshire until later in the year.

We will publish more information on this page once a service has been set up explaining who can access it and how this can happen.

Eligibility Criteria for NHS Prescribing of Mounjaro will be:-

To qualify for Mounjaro on the NHS, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  1. BMI over 40
    – You can check your BMI using the NHS BMI Calcuator, if you know your height and weight.
    – Your height and weight will also be checked at your appointment, so please provide accurate information.
  2. At least four of the following five health conditions must be diagnosed and recorded in your medical history:
    • Hypertension (high blood pressure requiring medication)
    • Obstructive sleep apnoea, confirmed by a sleep clinic
    • Type 2 diabetes
    • Cardiovascular disease (including heart disease, stroke or vascular disease)
    • Hypercholesterolaemia (high cholesterol)

If You Do Not Meet the Criteria

Unfortunately, under current NHS guidelines, your GP will not be able to prescribe Mounjaro for weight loss if you do not meet all of the above eligibility requirements.

We kindly ask that you do not request an appointment to discuss Mounjaro at this time.
